Namaste.

The Postures

Three weeks ago my boyfriend suggested signing up for a class of some kind together. He is into Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai, while I’m into ballet and the occasional spin or kickboxing class. Needless to say I wasn’t sure how I would find something we could both agree to go to. Somehow I convinced him to start Bikram Yoga with me. I found a studio 15 minutes away from where we both live with an introductory rate for first time students. We have unlimited classes to attend for the month of March!

Two weeks into our yoga practice, I have gone to three classes. Two with the boyfriend. He finds it just as challenging as me and I enjoy being on the relatively the same pace as each other at our new found hobby. I am trying to go more often every week but it is hard to fit around my work schedule.

Here’s a little background on the Bikram Yoga practice in case you are unfamiliar…

The practice of Bikram Yoga is commonly known as “hot yoga” and boy is it hot! The studio is heated to 105 degrees during the duration of the 90 minute class. Bikram Choudhury is credited to the popularity of this style of yoga. Bikram is said to provoke strong feelings. It is not uncommon to feel an array of emotions when practicing. His trademarked hot yoga has a host of celebrity followers. Choudhury was a former weight-lifter who turned to yoga after a weight crushed his knees; his yoga practice restored them to full health.

The class starts with a standing series and ends with a floor series. You truly work every part of your body and mind. With each pose, a different system in your body is affected: Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Endocrine, Lymphatic, Central Nervous, Digestive and or Musculoskeletal.

I have found that on the days I plan on going to yoga, I am more aware of what foods I am eating and how much water I am drinking. I think this yoga thing is going to be a good for us. Meditate, sweat, workout, relax, breathe!

  1. tried it… Um yeah…. so on the poster? Where is the picture of the chubby (me) sweating profusely and dry heaving? I’ll stick to spin where there’s less of a chance of someone in the class getting “too comfortable” and tooting!!

  2. I’m glad you and C have found something to enjoy together but I can’t wrap my head around him actually doing that. And Sam’s comment is hilarious!!!!

  3. Does sound wonderful in theory however I’m somewhat disappointed there are no photos of either you or Chris doing yoga poses. LMAO about Sam’s tooting in class scenario!!
